Natural Home Remedies for Dry Skin

By

Dry skin can occur in both men and women and happens when the oil glands are producing less oil. It is during winter when most people complain of having dry skin and this is because of the reduction in humidity. The areas that are most affected by dry skin are the cheeks, the area around the eyes, lower arms, chest and thighs. Dry skin is characterized by scaliness and in severe cases, cracking. Other causes linked to dry skin are sun exposure, harsh makeups and soaps and pollution as well as deficiencies in Vitamins A, B and E. Obviously, it is important to keep dry skin moisturized and hydrated. However, some moisturizers and lotions available in the market today are not good enough to do just that. The products that are good in moisturizing, on the other hand, can be quite expensive. Luckily, there are various natural home remedies for dry skin which are highly recommended by experts. Not only will it be effective in moisturizing dry skin, it will also cost less than buying moisturizers from your beauty shops.

Milk

Milk has long been used to treat dry skin. Whole milk is known to contain natural fatty acids which keeps the skin moisturized and supple. It is particularly great for dry and mature skin. Add in dried chamomile and dry lavender and your skin will definitely improve. Here's how you can do it: combine a cup of milk and a tablespoon each of dried chamomile and dried lavender in a jar. Put the lid on and store it in the fridge for 3-4 days. Get around 2 tablespoon of the mixture and massage it on your face. Leave it for 5 minutes before rinsing. Do this everyday until you have used it all up. Make sure to rinse your face well since milk can breed bacteria.

Avocado

Because avocado is rich in Vitamins A, C and E as well as in Phosphorus and Magnesium, it is a great natural home remedy for dry skin. If you are interested in trying it, you can make an avocado facial mask. Do this by mashing half an avocado and add to this a few drops of fresh lime juice. Apply it on clean face and let it stay for 15 minutes. Afterward, alternately rinse it with warm and cold water. If you do not have lime juice, you can substitute it with a teaspoon of whole milk yogurt

Bananas

Bananas are one of the best natural home remedies for dry skin and one of the cheapest too. Because it is a rich source of Vitamin A and Potassium, it is effective in keeping the skin soft and moisturized. Try making a Banana Facial Mask simply by mashing a piece of ripe banana and applying it to your face and neck. Leave it for 10 minutes before washing it off with cool water. You can also add a teaspoon of honey to the mixture. You can also use it as a scrub simply by adding granulated sugar.

Other natural ways of keeping dry skin hydrated is by drinking plenty of water everyday. Try drinking at least ten glasses of water but if you can go beyond that then all the better. You may also want to try using baby lotions instead of the ones for adults. Some adult lotions actually have chemical which can make the skin drier. Honey is great natural home remedy for dry skin as well. Rub honey all over your skin 10 minutes before taking a shower. And of course, make sure you exercise regularly. Exercise helps unblock your pores, allowing the production of natural oils. You should also get enough sleep because lack of it really does affect the condition of the skin.

Great hub. Do you know, what's the lime juice or natural yoghurt for in the avo mask?

I've always had good results with using shea butter on my dry skin but I'll have to give the avocado a try also.
