How to Get a Student Loan Without a Job

By Nina'sWorld

With the cost of college education continuously rising, it is understandable why many are applying for student loans. However, most student loans require applicants to be employed. This can be troublesome to students who do not have a job because they want to focus on their studies. This certainly is understandable as it can be quite difficult to study and work at the same time. Besides having to cut down on their study time, students who are working part-time tend to be in school longer - increasing their loan needs. Luckily, there are various options which unemployed students have in order to acquire student loans. Before getting one though, it is advisable to check your overall worth. This may include savings, donations from family and friends as well as stocks and bonds. This will help give you an idea on where and how to start applying for a loan.

The first thing you should do is to go to FAFSA's (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) website. There are different types of student loans they offer. First is the Federal Stafford Loan. Regardless of their job history or financial need, this loan can be granted to students who are applying for it. Another type is the Federal Perkins Loan. This loan is approved to those who have shown that they have a financial need. Before any of these is granted though, you will have to fill out the FAFSA form so they can assess whether you qualify for any of their student loans. Make sure to submit the forms though before you reach the deadline. File it early if possible.

If you can get yourself a co-signer, you can try applying for a private loan. Approach your parents or any other trusted adult and ask if they will be willing to co-sign a private loan for you. Before opting a private student loan though, make sure you read and understand information about it as well the process. Compare private from federal student loans and from there decide which one you should go for. Learn more about private student loans here.

It will also be helpful to visit the college or university you are planning to enter. Certainly, there will be someone there who will be able to help you identify which student loan you should apply for and how the process will be. Most often, they have application forms ready to potential students. You can also ask someone who has knowledge of financial aid to further discuss to you how a student loan works. He or she will be able to look at the information you have gathered and determine if these are correct.

When completing application forms, ready all the information you will be needing such as your social security number and tax return information - if you have it. Don't be in a hurry to fill it out. Take your time to avoid any mistakes. It is also important to be patient when trying to get a student loan. Without a job, it can be difficult but it certainly is possible with all the optiones mentioned above.

I've never needed a job to get a student loan, the federal government has always handed out loans whether you have a job or not. At least in America anyway. I have done both undergrad studies and graduate studies, having no job most of the time while going to college.
