How Often Should You Wash Your Dog?

Just how often should you wash your dog? There are different factors that you should consider. Most often, you will known when your dog needs a bath. There are some dog owners who bathe their dogs only twice a year while some do it almost every day. Both of these are not advisable though. Washing your dogs only twice a year can be unhygienic more so if they are outdoor dogs. If you bathe them everyday though, you might strip natural oils from their coat. Dog shampoos used before may be too harsh on the skin Today though, dog shampoos have been formulated to be mild and gentle on the coat and skin of your pet dogs which is why it is okay to bathe them more often. Here are some of the other factors that you should consider when determining how often you should bathe your dog.

  • Does your dog live indoor or outdoor? If your dog lives inside the house and perhaps stays on your couch and sleeps on your bed, you may want to consider bathing your pet regularly. You would not want him to get dirt all over your couch or your bed. If your dog stays outside, consider his coat. If it tends to stay dry, you may not have to wash him often.
  • Different types of dog breeds mean different types of coat. There are dogs that have oily skin and if this is the case, he should be bathed at least once a week. If the dog's coat has a harsh texture, they can be washed once a month. Harsh-textured coats are good in repelling dirt. Nonetheless, you will know when your dog needs one. If he gets very dirty, give him a bath soon as having dirt on his body for a longer period of time will do him no good.
  • Allergies of both the pet dog and the people living near him should be considered. If this exists, it is important to bathe and groom him often to prevent dander from accumulating. Dander is the tiny particles that is found on a dog's skin and hair. If allergy exists on either the pet or the owner or perhaps on both of them, it is advisable to wash your dog at least once a week.
  • The climate can help you determine how often to wash your dogs. In the summer, ticks tend to multiply faster which is why it is advisable to bathe them more often. In the winter, your dog may find it fun to play in the snow. However, this might make them develop a "Hot Spot" or "Moist Eczema." This is caused by a dampness of the undercoat and when they are not dried thoroughly. If this happens, the best thing for you to do is to bathe them and shave off their coat.

These are some of the factors that you should consider in determining how often to wash your dog. What's important is that they are clean and that you will only use products that are mild and gentle on them.
