Choosing Mobile Phone Contracts
By Nina'sWorld
Before choosing mobile phone contracts, it is important to understand what such a contract is for and why you would want to apply for one. What is a mobile phone contract? A contract of this nature means that you will be paying for a fixed fee every month. There are different length of periods a mobile contract covers although often, it is set at 12 months or 18 months. Some mobile phone companies offer shorter and longer terms. When choosing a mobile phone contract, you will be able to choose from various packages that have different number and limit of call minutes and text messages. Therefore, you can choose which one suits you best. If you are someone who makes more calls than text messages, go for a plan that has higher call minutes. It can also be the other way around. If you would want to use the internet on your mobile phone, you can choose a plan that will allow you to do this. Most often, plans of this kind are understandably more expensive. Here are the other things that you should remember when choosing mobile phone contracts.
The reason why people go for mobile phone contracts is the fact that it comes with a free phone. Depending on the type of plan you will be getting, there are different models of mobile phones you can choose from. However if it is a top of the line cell phone that you want, you will need to pay a certain amount which will be added on top of your mobile contract in order to get it. For you to be able to own the phone though, you will have to finish the contract that binds you to the company. This is just one of the many conditions that are included in the contract so it is best to read it well before signing one as there may be clauses in it that may work against your advantage.
Although you have a certain call and text message limit, you still can go over it. The company will charge you for any extra call or text message that you make that is beyond your plan. This is one of the reasons why you should be careful in using your mobile phone as well. There are a lot of people who are not mindful of their usage and end up getting surprised when they get their bill at month's end.
When choosing mobile phone contracts, it is advisable to compare at least three plans from different companies. In this way, you will be able to see which one will work the best for you and your mobile phone usage. Aside from this, mobile phone companies also offer freebies, discounts and other perks along with their mobile phone contracts. You may want to look at these as well if only to help you decide better.

It depends on the country I think. In many parts of Asia it is also at 2 yrs usually.
I found out the hard way, after being with T-mobile for almost 3 years. I went to another carrier and T-Mobile charged me a full month for not providing them with a 30 days notice of cancellation, even though my contract expired after 2 years. Robbery!
