Energy efficient light bulbs have become more popular over these past few years as more and more people are becoming conscious about their energy consumption. It is also more commonly known as Compact Fluorescent Lamps or CFLs. The recent economic downturn has definitely made people consider getting an energy saving light bulb so as to reduce their electricity bill. Aside from the lower costs though, those who have become environment-friendly switched to using energy efficient light bulbs from the usual fluorescent light bulbs that we usually use at home. While it is the positive side of it that we know of, there are experts who say that using CFLS over a long period of time may be harmful to a person's health. Experts have conducted various studies to determine if it is indeed true that energy efficient light bulbs may be bad for the health.

A group of German scientists have said that energy saving light bulbs may contain carcinogenic chemical and toxins which can be released when the light is switched on. Experts have said that when a product contains these chemicals and toxins, it is very important that it is kept far from where people usually stay. Scientists have said that it would be fine to use CFLs as long as you use it economically and in areas where there is ventilation. They have also advised against using a CFL just above your head as this can be harmful to the health.

Abraham Haifa, a professor at Haifa University in Israel, claimed that the use of energy saving light bulbs or CFLs particularly at night can increase the possibility of developing breast cancer. He said that the reason for this is because the blue light that CFLs give off imitate daylight and in turn, the body's production of the hormone melatonin is disrupted.

Another research has said that the factors which make energy efficient light bulbs dangerous is the mercury it contains, ultraviolet radiation and electromagnetic fields. When a person has been exposed to these over time, he or she may experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, depression and anxiety. The Migraine Action Association have said that the use of CFLs can trigger migraines because of its brightness. Skin experts also said that the intensity of the light may lead to skin problems.

However, there are many experts and goverment officials who have said that it would take more years of thorough research until someone can prove whether or not energy efficient light bulbs can really be bad for the health. This is why there may not be a tangible reason to panic as so far, no one has been reported to fall it because of CFLs.
