Are Calcium Supplements and Heart Disease Linked?
62Recent studies suggest that there exists a link between calcium supplements and heart disease. Five different studies were conducted and more that 8,000 people participated in it. Findings from scientists based in different countries such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States were compared and they had the same conclusions - that patients who took calcium supplements may increase their risk of having a heart attack by around 30% than those who did not took the supplement and this is regardless of their sex and age. It is important to note however that participants did not take Vitamin D supplements while they were involved in the research. Why are calcium supplements and heart disease linked? Is it not advisable then to regularly take calcium supplements? These are the questions that a person who is taking the said supplements may be interested in.
Calcium supplements are used by both men and women who are aging to keep their bones strong. Although calcium is easily found in the food that we consume, many people think that they are not getting sufficient amounts of it which is why they choose to take calcium supplements. However, there are studies that suggest calcium supplements may increase blood calcium levels. This, in turn, can contribute to a person developing a heart disease. Because calcium supplements do not have proven benefits though, the said link between calcium supplements and heart disease is debatable.
There are other medical experts who are not convinced of the said studies. An expert has said that because heart attacks can be fatal, it is but normal to expect a certain increase in mortality rate among those who regularly take calcium supplements. That is not the case though which is why a number of experts are doubting the results of the aforementioned research.
Doctors, however, advise patients to get their sufficient calcium intake in food rather than in calcium supplements. Calcium can be acquired through various kinds of food although it may take a long time before the bones absorb the mineral. If you are taking calcium supplements for osteoporosis, medical experts suggest that you take a proper medication for it instead.
It is important to stress that the link between calcium supplements and heart disease is not established and it is a matter that remains to be proven. You should consult your doctor if you have any worries in your intake of calcium supplements.
